DEMOCRACY FOR GUINEA

Guinea (Conakry) is currently in chaos following President Alpha Conde's (82) decision to seek a controversial third presidential term, a move that has triggered months of deadly unrest in the country. Guinean civilians are currently being shot and killed by the Guinean military.

The government's callous actions have yet to be formally investigated or accounted for. Conde's authoritarianism contravenes Guinea's Constitution which allows freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Several deaths and injuries have been recorded during protests and riots, which also led to destruction of houses and properties. Internet and phone calls were disrupted or cut on 23 and 24 October.

Amnesty International has raised concerns about the silence of the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) given the scale of human rights violations inflicted on people in Guinea.

What is Happening in Guinea?

Conde, 82, is seeking a controversial third presidential term, a move that has triggered months of deadly unrest in the country. In March, the president, Alpha Conde, pushed through a new constitution which he argued would modernise the country – but also allowed him to bypass a two-term limit for presidents, even though the Guinean constitution imposes a two-term limit.

Over 200 people have been injured, 70 imprisoned and over 90 killed in anti-Conde protests since October last year.

The Guinean military is currently shooting at civilians in the streets of Guinea who are protesting the president’s decision to not concede.
